FMS, DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE CONNECTION

People with a fibromyalgia syndrome have a magnesium deficiency. It has been found that a magnesium deficiency causes insulin resistance, also referred to as Metabolic Syndrome, which in turn puts the person at risk for heart disease and diabetes.
Metabolic Syndrome:
Metabolic Syndrome is a group of health risks that significantly increase your chance of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
Diagnosis:
Metabolic Syndrome is diagnosed when three of the following symptoms is is present:
abdominal
fat: waist circumference >40" for men and >35" for women
elevated
fasting triglycerides: >150 mg/dl
low HDL:
<40 mg/dl for men and <50 mg/dl for women
High blood
pressure (>130/85 mmHg) or taking antihypertensive medication
diagnosis
of insulin resistance or diabetes (fasting glucose > 100 mg/dl)
Nutrient Deficiencies
The presence of Metabolic Syndrome may lead to various nutrient deficiencies:
Vitamin E:
needed to reduce insulin resistance, reduce risk of diabetic complications,
moderate inflammatory response, and reduce oxidative stress.
Vitamin D:
needed to reduce insulin resistance
Vitamin
B1: needed for glucose metabolism
Vitamin
B3: needed to lower cholesterol, lower blood triglycerides, increase HDL and
inhibit oxidation of LDL.
Vitamin
B6: needed for glucose tolerance and reduce blood pressure
Co-Enzyme
Q10: needed to reduce blood pressure, protect arteries from oxidation of
LDL, and decrease atherosclerotic plaque.
Alpha
Lipoic Acid: needed to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose
tolerance, reduce blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease, and aid
weight loss.
Calcium:
needed to decrease the risk of obesity and reduce blood pressure
Chromium:
needed for glucose tolerance
Magnesium:
needed for hundreds of enzymatic reactions in the body and to reduce
blood pressure and reduce risk of diabetes
Selenium:
needed to reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce fasting blood
glucose levels, and protect against hypertension
Antioxidants:
needed to reduce the risk of heart disease
