CAUSES OF FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME
Research has shown that there are four main causes of fibromyalgia syndrome:
hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal
axis dysregulation
behavioral
and psychological factors
BEHAVIORAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS
The limbic system (of the brain) is a high-order functional regulator that affects fatigue, pain, sleep, weight, appetite, libido, respiration, temperature, blood pressure, immune and endocrine systems and the modulation of the peripheral system.
The limbic system is the primary mediator of the stress response.
The hypercortisol state of prolonged stress damages neurons.
It is well accepted that victims of child abuse are more likely to develop functional changes in neurons.
Environmental Stressors
For all biologic stressors and environment characterized by the following will amplify the adverse physiologic effects:
lack of
control
unpredictability
lack of
support
Other Stressors that trigger FMS
catastrophic
events
EBV
