CAUSES OF FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME
Research has shown that there are four main causes of fibromyalgia syndrome:
hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal
axis dysregulation
behavioral
and psychological factors
PAIN PROCESSING SYSTEMS
Central Nervous System
In the fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) patient the central nervous system processes pain differently than in the non-FMS patient.
Central Sensitization: The nervous system interprets light stimuli as painful.
Neural hormones affect sleep, pain, immunity, emotions, constriction and dilation of blood vessels.
Abnormal levels of neural hormones (neurotransmitters) in FMS:
serotonin
Substance
P
GABA
noradrenaline
endorphins
histamine
neuropeptide
Y
Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction
Symptoms can include:
neurally
medicated hypotension (NMH)
dizziness
weakness
night /
day sweats
nasal
congestion
